ABS Module (EBCM) Diagnostic Guide

ABS Light Stays On? Don’t Ignore It.

An ABS failure doesn’t just disable anti-lock braking—it often kills your Traction Control and Stability Control too. This guide helps you determine if the problem is a sensor or the module.

Note: While Highway 71 Auto Parts specializes in Engine and Transmission Control Modules (ECM/TCM), we provide these diagnostic guides as a free resource to help you troubleshoot other common automotive electronics. Please note that we do not currently stock replacement units for the module described in this specific guide.

What is the EBCM?

The Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) is the computer that sits on top of your ABS pump. It processes data from wheel speed sensors and commands the hydraulic valves to pulse the brakes. In GM trucks (Silverado/Tahoe), internal solder joints frequently fail due to vibration.

👨‍🔧 Mechanic’s Insight

“If your ABS and Brake lights are on, but your speedometer still works, it’s likely the module. If the speedometer is ALSO dead or jumping, check the rear wheel speed sensor or the harness first!”

Common ABS Failure Signs

  • âś… Service Traction Control Message: Often the first sign of a failing EBCM.
  • âś… Pump Runs Constantly: If you hear a humming from under the hood even with the key off, the ABS relay is stuck “On.” Unplug the module immediately to prevent burning out the pump!
  • âś… Code C0265: Electronic Brake Control Module Relay Circuit—this is a classic module failure code.
