Is Your GM Vehicle Acting Possessed?
As a mechanic with over two decades of experience, I’ve seen it all. A customer’s 2011 Chevy Traverse comes in with the radio turning on and off by itself, the power locks working intermittently, and a persistent “Service Stabilitrak” light on the dash. They’ve already replaced the battery, but the electrical gremlins persist. The culprit? A failing Body Control Module (BCM). This module is the central nervous system for your vehicle’s comfort and convenience features, and when it starts to go, it can cause a cascade of confusing and frustrating problems.
The Direct Solution for Your Electrical Headaches
This isn’t just a replacement part; it’s a complete, ready-to-install solution. We take this genuine GM Body Control Module and program it specifically to your vehicle’s VIN before it ever leaves our facility. This means it arrives loaded with the latest GM software updates, ensuring optimal performance and compatibility. You get to skip the expensive trip to the dealership for programming and avoid the hassle of trying to find a local shop with the right equipment.
Expert Pro Tip: Check This Before You Order
In my shop, I’ve seen countless BCMs misdiagnosed. Before you condemn your module, perform a full charging system test. A weak battery or a failing alternator can produce low or fluctuating voltage, causing symptoms nearly identical to a bad BCM (like flickering lights and random warning messages). Ensuring your battery has a full charge and your alternator is putting out the correct voltage can save you from replacing a part that isn’t broken. It’s a 15-minute check that could save you hundreds.
Symptoms of a Failing GM Body Control Module:
If you’re experiencing any of the following, a faulty BCM is the likely cause:
- โ Intermittent or non-functional power windows, door locks, or mirrors.
- โ Erratic interior or exterior lighting (flickering, staying on, or not turning on).
- โ The security system or keyless entry malfunctioning.
- โ False warnings on the dashboard (e.g., “Service Airbag,” “Service Tire Monitor System”).
- โ The radio or infotainment system behaving erratically.
- โ A vehicle that won’t start despite having a good battery and starter.
Easy Installation & Post-Install Requirements
Replacing the BCM is a straightforward job for a DIYer with basic tools. However, to ensure full functionality after installation, a couple of steps are required using a professional-grade scan tool.
- Safety First: Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on any vehicle electronics.
- Locate and Replace: Find your old BCM (locations vary by model, see fitment list below). Carefully disconnect the wiring harnesses and remove the module. Install the new one in its place and reconnect everything.
- Reconnect Battery: Re-attach the negative battery terminal.
- Airbag System Relearn: You will need to perform the ‘Setup SDM Primary Key in BCM’ procedure. This step is critical to extinguish the airbag warning light and ensure the safety system is operational.
- Brake Sensor Calibration: On some models, a Brake Pedal Position Sensor calibration is necessary to ensure the brake lights and stability control systems function correctly.
Note: If you are not comfortable performing these relearn procedures, any qualified independent mechanic can complete them for you quickly.
