Is Your Car Running Rough, Stalling, or Refusing to Start?
There’s nothing more frustrating than a vehicle you can’t rely on. If your 2004-2005 Cobalt, ION, Malibu, or Pursuit is suddenly plagued by a persistent Check Engine Light, erratic engine behavior, or has left you stranded, a failing Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is a very likely culprit. As the central computer for your engine, its failure can cause a cascade of confusing and costly problems. But the solution doesn’t have to involve expensive dealership diagnostics and programming fees.
This is a direct-fit replacement PCM, part number 12589320, that arrives at your door fully programmed to your vehicle’s specific VIN. We load the latest, most stable software updates from GM, ensuring optimal performance and compatibility right out of the box. This eliminates the most difficult part of the repair, turning a complex job into a manageable DIY task.
A Customer’s Story: The Intermittent Stall
A customer’s 2005 Chevy Cobalt came into my shop last month with these exact symptoms. It would run fine for days, then suddenly stall at a stoplight and refuse to restart for 20 minutes. The dashboard was lit up, and they had already replaced the battery and alternator with no success. After a quick scan, I found code P0601 โ Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error. This is a dead giveaway for a failing PCM. On these Ecotec engines, I’ve seen this dozens of times. We installed a VIN-programmed module just like this one, and the car was running perfectly in under an hour, saving the customer hundreds compared to a dealer visit.
Is Your Vehicle Showing These Symptoms?
A faulty PCM can manifest in many ways. If you’re experiencing any of the following, this module is the likely solution:
- โ Persistent Check Engine Light (CEL) with codes related to internal module failure (e.g., P0601, P0606).
- โ Unexplained stalling or engine hesitation.
- โ Complete no-start condition where the engine cranks but won’t fire.
- โ Poor fuel economy and reduced engine power.
- โ Harsh or erratic automatic transmission shifting.
- โ Communication errors with diagnostic scan tools.

Simple Installation Guide: Get it Done at Home
Replacing the PCM on these vehicles is straightforward. While locations vary slightly, the process is similar. Hereโs a general guide:
- Safety First: Disconnect the negative terminal from your vehicle’s battery and wait at least 10 minutes for the system to fully discharge.
- Locate the PCM: On the Cobalt and Pursuit, it’s typically in the LH front of the engine compartment. On the Malibu, it’s often on the LH side of the dash. Consult a repair manual for your specific model’s location.
- Disconnect Connectors: Carefully release the locking tabs on the electrical harness connectors and pull them straight out from the module. Never force them.
- Remove the Old Module: Unbolt the PCM from its mounting bracket. There are usually two or three bolts holding it in place.
- Install the New PCM: Mount your new, pre-programmed module in place and tighten the bolts.
- Reconnect Everything: Firmly press the electrical connectors back into the new PCM until they click and lock. Reconnect your negative battery terminal.
- Final Step: Start the vehicle. It may run slightly rough for the first few minutes as the computer completes its internal checks. Let it idle for 5-10 minutes.
Expert Pro Tip: Check Your Grounds First
Before you install your new PCM, take five minutes to inspect and clean the main engine-to-chassis ground strap. It’s often a braided metal strap bolted to the engine block and the vehicle’s frame. Over time, it can corrode, causing high resistance. A bad ground can starve the PCM of stable voltage, mimicking the symptoms of a failed module. A quick cleaning with a wire brush can sometimes solve the issue or, at the very least, ensure your new module has a perfect connection to operate correctly.
