Is Your GM Truck or Van Acting Possessed?
Are you dealing with flickering lights, power windows with a mind of their own, a security light that won’t turn off, or a radio that randomly changes stations? These aren’t just annoyances; they’re classic signs of a failing Body Control Module (BCM). The BCM is the central command center for your vehicle’s body electronics, and when it starts to go, it can cause a cascade of frustrating and unpredictable electrical problems. Driving a vehicle with these issues isn’t just irritating—it can be a serious distraction.
Expert Pro Tip: Check for Water Intrusion First
In my 20+ years on the shop floor, I’ve seen hundreds of BCM failures on these GM trucks and vans. One of the most common culprits, especially on the pickups, is a leaky windshield seal or a bad cowl seal. Water drips down and finds its way directly onto the BCM and its connectors, causing corrosion and short circuits. Before you install your new module, take a flashlight and carefully inspect the wiring harness and the area around the BCM for any signs of moisture, rust, or green/white crust on the connector pins. Cleaning this up can prevent a repeat failure down the road.

Simple Installation Process
Replacing the BCM is a straightforward job for a confident DIYer. While the exact location varies slightly between trucks and vans, the general process is the same.
- Safety First: Disconnect the negative terminal from your vehicle’s battery.
- Locate the BCM: On Silverado/Sierra pickups, it’s typically found under the driver’s side of the dashboard, near the steering column. On Express/Savana vans, it’s usually behind the center dash trim.
- Disconnect and Remove: Carefully unplug the electrical connectors. They have locking tabs that need to be depressed. Once unplugged, unbolt or unclip the old BCM and remove it.
- Install the New BCM: Mount your new, pre-programmed module in place and securely reconnect all electrical connectors.
- Reconnect Battery: Reattach the negative battery terminal.
IMPORTANT: Post-Installation Procedures
After installing your new 2003-2007 GM BCM, a couple of final steps are required to sync the new module with your vehicle’s other systems. These procedures require a professional-grade bidirectional scan tool.
- Airbag System Reset: You must perform the ‘Setup SDM Primary Key in BCM’ procedure. This step is critical to ensure the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) communicates correctly with the new BCM and extinguishes the airbag warning light on your dash.
- Brake Pedal Position Sensor: Some vehicles may require a ‘Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration’ to ensure the brake lights and stability control systems function correctly.
If you are not equipped to perform these steps, a local independent repair shop can complete them for you quickly.
