Is Your GM Vehicle Running Rough? The Solution is Here.

If you’re dealing with a frustrating check engine light, unpredictable stalling, poor fuel mileage, or harsh shifting in your 1998 Buick Riviera or other GM vehicle, a failing Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is often the culprit. As the central computer for your engine and transmission, its proper function is non-negotiable. This isn’t just a replacement part; it’s a direct-fit, fully programmed solution designed to restore your vehicle’s performance and reliability.

I’ve been diagnosing these GM systems for over two decades. A customer’s 1998 Park Avenue came in last month with a classic case: it would start fine cold, but after 15 minutes of driving, it would stall at stoplights and refuse to restart for half an hour. The owner had already replaced the crank sensor and ignition control module. Using a scope, we found the PCM was dropping the signal to the ignition module once it warmed up. A new, properly programmed PCM like this one solved the problem instantly. Don’t waste time and money chasing ghosts—address the core issue.

Why Choose Our Programmed 1998 Riviera PCM?

Getting your car back on the road shouldn’t be a complicated ordeal. We take the guesswork and dealer-level complexity out of the equation. When you order from us, you’re not just getting a part in a box. You’re getting a component that is meticulously prepared for your specific vehicle.

  • ✔ VIN-Specific Programming: We flash this module with the latest GM-certified software using the VIN you provide. This ensures it communicates perfectly with your car’s other systems, just as it did from the factory.
  • ✔ Resolves Common Failures: This module is the definitive fix for a wide range of issues, including false sensor codes, communication errors with your scan tool, and erratic engine behavior.
  • ✔ Plug-and-Play Ready: Once programmed, this module is ready for installation right out of the box. No need for an expensive trip to the dealership for additional programming.

Expert Pro Tip: Check Your Grounds

Before installing your new PCM, take five extra minutes to inspect and clean the main engine-to-chassis and battery-to-chassis ground connections. On these late ’90s GM vehicles, corrosion on these grounds can create electrical noise and voltage drops that mimic PCM failure and can even shorten the life of the new module. A wire brush and a dab of dielectric grease can save you a major headache down the road.

Simple Installation Process

You can perform this replacement with basic hand tools. While the exact location can vary slightly by model, the PCM is typically found inside the engine bay air filter housing or mounted to the fender.

  1. Safety First: Disconnect the negative terminal from your car’s battery.
  2. Locate the PCM: Identify the module and its connecting wiring harnesses.
  3. Disconnect Harnesses: Carefully unclip the locking tabs and pull the wiring connectors straight out. Never force them.
  4. Remove Old Module: Unbolt the PCM from its mounting bracket and remove it from the vehicle.
  5. Install New Module: Bolt the new, programmed PCM into place and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses. You should hear a ‘click’ as they lock.
  6. Reconnect Battery: Re-attach the negative battery terminal.
  7. Perform Security Relearn: Most of these GM vehicles will require a simple security relearn procedure to sync the new PCM with your key’s anti-theft chip. This can typically be done by turning the key to the ‘ON’ position for 10-15 minutes, then off, and repeating two more times before starting the engine.
