Is Your GM Truck or Van Running Rough?
If your 1998-1999 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, or another compatible GM truck is suffering from no-start conditions, erratic shifting, a persistent check engine light, or poor fuel economy, a failing Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is often the culprit. In my 20+ years in the shop, I’ve seen countless vehicles from this era sidelined by a faulty engine computer. It’s the brain of your vehicle, and when it goes, it can cause a cascade of confusing and frustrating problems.
The Smart Solution: A VIN-Programmed PCM
Forget expensive dealership visits and the hassle of finding a local shop that can program older modules. This is a tested, reliable used PCM that we program specifically to your vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) before it ships. We load it with the latest GM-certified software updates, ensuring it communicates perfectly with your engine, transmission, and all other onboard systems. This isn’t just a replacement part; it’s a direct-fit, plug-and-play solution to get your vehicle running right again.
From the Shop Floor: A Real-World Diagnosis
“A customer’s ’99 Tahoe came in last week on a tow truck. It would crank but wouldn’t start. They had already replaced the fuel pump and the ignition control module with no luck. The scanner wouldn’t communicate with the PCMโa dead giveaway. We installed one of our VIN-programmed PCMs, and the truck fired up on the first try. Itโs a common misdiagnosis; people chase fuel and spark issues when the computer itself is the root cause. This simple swap saved them hundreds in unnecessary parts and labor.”

Easy Installation Guide for Your 1998-1999 Express 2500 PCM
Replacing your PCM is a straightforward job you can do with basic hand tools. Follow these steps for a successful installation:
- Safety First: Disconnect the negative terminal from your vehicle’s battery to prevent any electrical shorts.
- Locate the PCM: On most of these trucks and vans, the PCM is located in the engine compartment, typically on the driver’s side inner fender or near the battery.
- Disconnect the Connectors: Carefully unclip and remove the electrical harness connectors from the old PCM. There are usually four distinct color-coded connectors. Inspect them for any corrosion or bent pins.
- Remove the Old Module: Unbolt the PCM from its mounting bracket and remove it from the vehicle.
- Install the New Module: Mount your new, pre-programmed PCM into the bracket and securely re-fasten the bolts.
- Reconnect Everything: Firmly plug the harness connectors back into the new PCM. You’ll hear a click when they are properly seated. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Perform Security Relearn (If Necessary): Turn the key to the ‘ON’ position (without starting the engine) for 10-15 minutes. The ‘Security’ light on the dash should turn off. Turn the key off for 10 seconds, then start the vehicle. It’s now ready to drive.
