Is Your Late ’90s Chevy Truck Acting Up?
If you’re driving a 1998 or 1999 Chevrolet 2500, you know it’s one of the toughest trucks ever built. But even the most reliable workhorse can develop frustrating electronic issues. Are you experiencing a crank-but-no-start condition? Does the transmission shift harshly or unpredictably? Is the Check Engine Light on, but your scan tool can’t communicate with the computer? These are classic signs that the brain of your truckโthe Powertrain Control Module (PCM)โis failing.
Over two decades in the shop, I’ve seen these symptoms countless times on this specific generation of GM trucks. The PCM, often mounted in the hot, vibrating engine bay, simply succumbs to age. Internal components and solder joints can fail, leading to intermittent or total failure.
A Technician’s Real-World Story
“A customer’s 1999 Chevrolet 2500 came in last week on a tow truck. It would crank all day but wouldn’t fire up. He had already replaced the fuel pump, filter, and even the ignition control module, but nothing worked. After confirming spark, my attention turned to the PCM. A quick check with a test light showed the fuel pump relay wasn’t getting the ground signal from the computer. We installed one of our VIN-programmed PCMs, performed the security relearn right in the bay, and the truck fired up on the first try. It saved him from more guesswork and unnecessary parts expenses.”

What a VIN-Programmed Module Does For You:
- โ Eliminates Guesswork: Solves common issues like no-start, poor shifting, stalling, and false sensor codes.
- โ Saves You Money: No need for an expensive trip to the dealership for programming. This module arrives ready for installation.
- โ Ensures Peak Performance: Loaded with the newest GM software updates to correct original factory drivability issues and optimize fuel and spark delivery.
- โ Plug-and-Play (Almost!): After installation, a simple security relearn procedure is required, which you can do yourself in about 10-12 minutes with just the ignition key. We provide instructions!
Installation & Security Relearn Procedure
Physically swapping the PCM is straightforward. It’s typically located on the driver’s side of the engine compartment. After you’ve installed the new module, you must perform the Passlock security relearn. This syncs the new PCM to your truck’s anti-theft system.
Security Relearn Steps:
- Turn the ignition key to the ‘ON’ position (do not start the engine).
- Observe the ‘Security’ light on the dash. It will turn off after approximately 10 minutes.
- Once the light turns off, turn the ignition key to ‘OFF’ and wait 10 seconds.
- Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of three 10-minute cycles.
- After the third cycle, the vehicle is ready to start.
